Packing for Vacation

In September I made a very unexpected trip to Mexico City and once in CDMX, I realized I had overpacked for a 3 day trip. So this December, I’ll be going to Acapulco, Guerrero and I want to make sure I pack correctly so I take only what I need. After researching and reading many blogs, I came up with a strategy that will work for me and anyone else that wants to look good on vacation while minimizing the amount of pieces they carry.

One of the biggest mistakes we make when packing is to pack based on what you have versus what you’ll do on vacay or where you’ll be going.

The first thing to know is what your itinerary will look like on a daily basis while you’re on vacation, that way you can take the correct amount of outfits and avoid overpacking.

Once you know, you can decide whether one outfit per day is enough or if you'll need 2 or 3 outfits per day. After you have the total number of outfits, the fun part starts.

First, pack your basics or the foundation of your outfits (eg. jean skirts, black dresss, jeans/leggings/shorts, white tops, jean jacket, neutral tanks and basic cardigans ( in case nights are cold).

Second, add color and texture: This is where you can add those pops of color and patterns with fun dresses, colorful bathing suits to wear as tops, or flowy pants that add that extra vacation glam.

Lastly, finish off with accessories and shoes! This part can also get tricky because packing too many can also take up a lot of space, so think about this wisely. Think about which pair of shoes can work well with multiple outfits and make sure to include one of each: sneakers (for the plane and walking), flats or sandals for the beach and to stay fresh, and heels or wedges if you plan to go out at night or attend day events that require a more dressed up look. Obviously this is different if you’re going on a work trip or if you’re headed to the mountains, but follow this guide and adjust accordingly.

Don’t forget your sunglasses, hats, and jewelry if you wear it!
